Callie ended her call with Marie and walked to the sofa where Brandon was sitting. His fingers were rapidly typing a text on his phone.

It was wonderful—but also surreal—to have him with her. She’d taken a significant step when she’d admitted her feelings for him, but having a man in her life again was still a huge adjustment. And she would always have worries going through her head. But she must admit being with him at this moment felt right.

Callie dropped next to Brandon. “What are you smiling about?”

“Rae sent some pictures of Maya.” He tapped on the phone and gave it to her.

Callie slowly swiped through several pictures. Some were of the baby girl alone on her stomach looking happy, a few with her mother or father.

“Oh, I remember those baby days. So precious.” Callie stopped at a picture of all three together. “They make a beautiful family.”

“They do,” Brandon agreed. “They almost didn’t.”

Callie cocked her head to him in curiosity. “What do you mean?”

“Old baggage, mistrust, and stubbornness almost keep them apart,” he said. “But they figured it out—with a little nudge. They needed to work out their own issues separately before realizing they couldn’t live without the other.”

“Do you really believe that? That they can’t live without the other?”

Brandon paused in thought before answering.

“They’re two fiercely independent people. If the circumstances were different, they’d probably manage to move on with their separate lives. Would they be happy? Probably not.”

“And they are happy?” Callie handed Brandon’s phone back.

Brandon smiled. “Solid.”

“Her husband has no issue with her being so close with you?”

“Dean and I are good. We had our moments initially, but he knows his wife is in love with him. And only him.”

Brandon put the phone away and changed the subject. “What did Marie say?”

Callie wanted to understand the dynamic between him and his friend better, but for now she switched focus. “Apparently, Marie had similar suspicions. She’s asked her investigator to dig deeper and further back to see if there’s a pattern.”

“Right. If Charlotte also worked for Alarie, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other female employees who suddenly up and left with some dubious payments.”

“Marie said they’d stumbled onto the info on Charlotte. It’d be risky trying to poke more into their private records.”

“I’m sure the investigator can find a way around it. In this age, everybody has digital footprints out in public. Unless Philippe has never touched any social media or the internet, we’ll find something.

“There are also gossips among employees or social acquaintances. Perhaps Genevieve and Anaïs can discreetly comb through information from their network. We just need to find a lead to something else or someone else besides Charlotte. Someone will talk.”

Brandon turned in his seat to face Callie. “A predator like Philippe wouldn’t have started with you or Charlotte in his…what? Thirties? He would’ve started much, much younger. And if I’m right, his family would’ve been covering for him for years.”

His theory got Callie thinking back. “Lorraine—Philippe’s mother—knew exactly what to do when I went to the police.
